It seems that since the invention of the television, there have been Infomercials - commercials which last the amount of time your average sitcom would, with repetitive phone numbers flashing across the screen, and the same five customers raving about how great the product has been for them.
As many as 200,000 informercials air each month, or 2.5 million a year! Most infomercials air in the early morning (typically between 2am and 5am.) According to a new study by the Electronic Retailing Association, 72% of all infomercial purchases are made impulsively.
One of the most popular infomercials of all time was for the Ginsu Knife®, which is still being produced today! The Infomercials, featuring a Japanese chef slicing through tin cans, radiator hoses, and squishy tomatoes, began airing on American television in 1976 and the product quickly became not only a household name, but a frequent parody. Ironically, the knives were produced right here in the USA - in Ohio - with their Japanese name and persona deliberately used to draw attention. And it worked!
The lengthy commercials caught on and other products began showing up on television screens across the country. Jane Fonda's workout tapes, Ron Popeil's rotisseries, George Foreman's Grills, Mari Winsor's Pilates DVDs, Jack LaLane's juicers, and even Kenny Kingston's Psychic Hotline!
As cable television developed, so did the infomercial. Networks such as HSN and QVC cropped up, creating 24/7 non-stop marketing. And these networks claim that their products and prices are exclusive to them, and often only available "one-time." What retailers are now finding out, is that those products are readily available for resale by other vendors and not limited to the television marketer. And consumers have learned this secret as well, making the search for "As Seen On TV" products a hot one!
There are many As Seen On TV wholesalers online. And their prices will often allow you to resell the products at a lower-than-TV price! Vending booths have appeared in malls, selling once "only on television" items such as slicers and choppers, trim painters, pasta pots, hair removal systems, rotisseries, sweepers and dusters, vitamins, and more!
The market has grown significantly and will continue to grow as savvy shoppers realize they can cut a better deal than what they're seeing on television.
