My story...

A white spot in the back of the throat.
A few years ago I began to notice a small white spot in the back of my throat. At first I thought I was just getting a sore throat but I didn't really feel any pain. After some time the spot remained. I began to panic thinking it could be some form of mouth cancer. I wanted to know what the spot was so I asked both my physician and dentist. I was told it was just some debris and I should gargle with a mouth rinse. I tried gargling and it didn't work.

It was getting annoying.
After several weeks the spot had grown and was becoming annoying, like there was a foreign object in my mouth. I never experienced pain. It was just extremely annoying. I decided to try to scrape the sore from my throat with a toothbrush. This proved to be quite the task. I was successful in nothing but gagging myself for the next three days. I eventually gathered my nerve and stuck my finger into my throat successfully removing the debris. I immediately checked the mirror to see if it was bleeding. Thankfully it was not. I noticed what looked like a hole where the substance was. The substance in my hand was a semi-hard white to off white ball. Now that it was gone along with the annoying foreign object feeling I was elated. This lasted for about three weeks until I noticed the annoying feeling again. I checked the mirror and saw another white spot. I decided to consult an old friend, the internet for advice.

Researching the spot.
Online I found a diagram and explanation. The white spot was actually called a tonsillolith. It was also referred to as a tonsil stone or a tonsil rock. The cause is not really known but the condition seems to be relatively harmless. Really the only negative impacts are the foreign object feeling and very bad breath (although I hadn't sniffed my tonsil rock apparently they smell very fowl). It is thought that the tonsilloliths are formed by deposits of mucous and other particles which gather in the tonsils of people with deep tonsil pockets. Apparently I only have one deep tonsil pocket because I was getting them on the left side of my throat each time.

How to Prevent tonsilloliths
I have found only one successful prevention measure that works for me. After some extensive internet searching I located a website belonging to Doctor Katz D.D.S. The site is dedicated to eliminating bad breath. Within the site there is a page that discusses tonsilloliths and their prevention. Doctor Katz suggests a special spray and nasal drops. How to Remove Tonsilloliths
Prior to trying the Doctor Katz remedy I did discover a much easier method for removing those annoying tonsil stones. I purchased a water pik and used it to flush the tonsil stone out. A water pik is a pressurized dental irrigator. It can be used to rinse food particles from between teeth and supposedly works better than flossing. To remove tonsilloliths you'll need a water pik that is strong enough to power out the tonsil stone. The smaller water piks will not work. I bought a Con-aire Interplak Water Jet which does the job just fine. I wouldn't go with any smaller than this one though. When using a water pik, I would start on the low setting and gradually increase pressure.  You don't want to use too much pressure.  The best price I've found on this irrigator is at Amazon.com ($39.99) click here for a direct link to it.
