SEO is a tremendous long-term marketing strategy if you eventually get rankings. If you don't, then it can seem a waste of time. Here are some tips that can help you find success.
1. Optimize All Pages - To the extent possible, try to optimize all pages of your site, not just the home page. Your goal is to push all the pages up in the rankings to draw traffic, not just the home page.
2. Daily Fresh Content - If you want to make the search engines sit up and notice you, add a daily tip to your site. Use automated software to preload the tips.
3. Mellow November - The online holiday shopping season is huge for most sites. Being wicked, Google and Yahoo usually do a big ranking update in early November. Don't mess with your site during this period or you could regret it.
4. Meta Description Tip - Your meta description is an important part of optimizing a page. To maximize the impact, your meta description should be the exact text in the first paragraph of the text on the page in question.
5. SEO Goals - The key to seo is setting your goals and sticking to them. It can take a while to get rankings, particularly if your site is new. If you get discouraged, just try to think how great it will be when you pop into the top 3 on your keywords.
6. What Is KEI? - KEI is a term of art in search engine optimization. It refers to whether a keyword phrase is worth trying to get ranked under. A KEI over 10 is worth pursuing. Higher is better.
7. Keyword Research Common Sense - When doing keyword research, don't leave your common sense at the door. Think about what phrases you would use to search for something and make sure to incorporate them in your site.
8. Black Hat Optimization - Black hat optimization refers to finding some trick to get rankings. Sounds good until the ranking process changes and you lose all your rankings. Be patient and go for long term, stable rankings.
9. The Keyword Box - When developing keyword lists for your optimization efforts, try to think beyond the subject matter of the site. Throw in catch all phrases such as "problems", "gifts" and so on as appropriate.
10. Keywords Article Titles - Many people mistakenly use their keyword phrase in articles submitted to directories. If you do this, the article directory may outrank you!
Ultimately, you need to be disciplined enough to commit to your seo efforts. Yes, it will take time, but ultimately the payoff will be tremendous in rankings, traffic and revenues.
